Have you heard of the retrofit grant, but you’re not fully sure what it entails? As an area of our expertise, here at ENX, we have broken the nitty gritty down so you can get to grips with this hugely beneficial grant available to the Irish public.

The Irish government, in collaboration with the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI), is making it easier than ever with a range of retrofit grants designed to slash your energy bills, reduce your carbon footprint, and boost your home's comfort.

What are Retrofit Grants and Why Should You Care?

Retrofit grants are financial incentives provided by the government to encourage homeowners to make energy-efficient upgrades to their homes. These upgrades not only enhance your living space but also contribute to Ireland's ambitious climate goals. By reducing energy consumption in homes across the country, we can collectively make a significant dent in carbon emissions.

Unlocking the Benefits: What's in it for You?

  • Lower Energy Bills: Upgrading your insulation, heating system, or switching to renewable energy sources can drastically reduce your monthly energy costs, putting more money back in your pocket.

  • Improved Comfort: Say goodbye to draughty rooms and uneven temperatures. Retrofitting ensures a more comfortable living environment year-round.

  • Increased Property Value: Energy-efficient homes are becoming increasingly desirable, and retrofitting can significantly boost your property's market value.

  • Environmental Impact: By reducing your energy consumption, you're actively contributing to a cleaner, greener Ireland and a healthier planet.

What Upgrades Does the Grant Cover?

The range of upgrades covered by retrofit grants is extensive, offering solutions for every aspect of your home's energy performance:

  • Insulation: Attic, wall, and floor insulation to prevent heat loss and keep your home warm in winter and cool in summer.

  • Heating Systems: Upgrading to high-efficiency boilers, heat pumps, or even renewable heating systems like biomass boilers.

  • Renewable Energy: Installing solar panels to generate your own electricity or solar water heating systems to reduce your reliance on fossil fuels.

  • Windows and Doors: Replacing old, inefficient windows and doors with modern, energy-saving alternatives.

  • Ventilation: Improving ventilation to ensure a healthy indoor environment while minimising heat loss.

Who is Eligible and How Can You Apply?

To be eligible for a retrofit grant, you typically need to meet certain criteria:

  • Home Ownership: You must be the owner-occupier of the home being retrofitted.

  • Building Age: Your home must have been built before a certain year, usually 2011 or earlier.

  • BER Assessment: You'll need to have a Building Energy Rating (BER) assessment conducted before and after the retrofit to measure the improvement.

  • Registered Contractor: The work must be carried out by a contractor registered with the SEAI.

The SEAI website provides detailed information on the various grant schemes, eligibility requirements, and the application process. You can also contact the SEAI directly for guidance and support.
